XRP and Cardano Share One Bearish Trend, but Their Next Moves Could Split

Three Things to Know

  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Ripple's Swell crowd that stablecoins will help fund the Treasury.

  • XRP momentum has quietly turned up while Cardano sellers still control the trend.

  • Cardano's nearest floor sits just a cent below its price, leaving almost no cushion.

Scott Bessent became the first sitting Treasury Secretary to open Ripple's Swell conference, calling stablecoins a future funding source for the government. Ripple paired the moment with new deals involving Robinhood and BNY.

XRP and Cardano remain stuck in a monthly downtrend, yet their charts now tell different stories. XRP has a fresh catalyst and improving momentum, while ADA has neither. Traders want to know whether XRP can break away or both slide together.

Bessent Brings Treasury Backing to Ripple's Swell Stage

Bessent spoke at The Shed in New York on Oct 27, 2026. He shared the stage with Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse. Bessent said stablecoins will be "an important source of funding for the Treasury." He noted that over 90% of stablecoins are pegged to the dollar, mostly backed by Treasuries. He gave no dollar estimate.

Bessent also placed digital assets in the tech race with China, beside AI and chips. "We are going to win in the digital asset stack," he said. DefiLlama data put the total stablecoin market near $300 billion on Oct 25.

Ripple used the event to announce several deals. Its Ripple National Trust Bank won final approval from the OCC. Robinhood will use Ripple infrastructure, including RLUSD settlement on the XRP Ledger. BNY expanded its deal to cover custody and tokenized trade finance using RLUSD, XRP and the ledger. Ripple also launched a Treasury yield product.

RLUSD is separate from XRP, so stablecoin growth does not automatically lift XRP's price. The CLARITY Act also stalled on Sept 15 after a 49-50 Senate vote. The OCC issued its final GENIUS Act rule on Oct 21, effective Jan 18, 2027.

XRP Momentum Turns Before Its Price Does

XRP traded near $1.31 on Oct 28, as the Swell news landed. It now sits around $1.32, down about 1% on the day and roughly flat for the week. The calm hides a rougher month. The token has lost about 13% over 30 days, and that damage is still visible on the daily chart.

The averages matter most here. The 50-day moving average, which tracks the average close over that period, is near $1.36. The 200-day line sits just above it, around $1.37. Both averages currently act as a ceiling. They are bunched so tightly that a modest rally of a few percent would reclaim both at once.

Momentum hints that such a move is possible. RSI, a 0 to 100 gauge of momentum, reads 44. That is slightly below neutral and far from oversold. Sellers have the edge, yet they are not pressing hard.

The MACD, a trend indicator, has crossed above its signal line. It often turns before price does, so the cross is an early sign that selling pressure is fading. No strong trend is in place yet, though. That leaves room for a turn in either direction.

Levels frame the next test. Resistance stands near $1.40, just above the average cluster, with a second barrier around $1.49. A daily close above the first would put XRP back over both averages and start to repair the monthly slide.

Support sits near $1.25. A break there would expose the next floor around $1.05, a much deeper drop. For now, XRP is pinned between a nearby floor and a ceiling that looks within reach.

Sellers Still Steer Cardano Toward $0.19

Cardano has no Swell-style catalyst, and its chart shows it. ADA trades near $0.20 after a steeper slide than XRP's. The token is down about 9% over the past week and roughly 20% over the month.

The averages sit much farther away. The 50-day line is near $0.22. The 200-day sits higher, around $0.24. That gap means ADA would need a rally of roughly a fifth just to reach its longer-term ceiling. XRP's averages, by comparison, are a short hop overhead.

RSI reads 35, close to the oversold line at 30. Sellers have pushed hard, and a bounce could come from exhaustion alone. That would only be a relief move inside the downtrend.

Momentum shows no sign of turning. The MACD remains below its signal line and still points down. Trend-strength readings also show a real downtrend, led by sellers. XRP has neither problem.

The nearest floor is tight. Support sits around $0.19, only a cent below price. A break would open the way to the next level near $0.17. Resistance lies around $0.23, just above the 50-day zone, with a second barrier near $0.26.

Where the Two Paths Could Part

  • Bullish: XRP posts a daily close above its first resistance, clearing both averages in one move. ADA reclaims its nearest ceiling just above the 50-day zone, which would show buyers returning across both coins. The setup fails if XRP loses its nearby floor.

  • Bearish: ADA breaks its one-cent cushion and slides toward the next floor. XRP slips under support and heads for its deeper level. A recovery by XRP back over first resistance would cancel this view.

Policy Tailwinds Favor XRP for Now

XRP holds the stronger hand for now. Its momentum has started to turn, and the Swell deals give it a fresh story that Cardano lacks. ADA still needs to build a base before buyers can trust any bounce.

The policy boost has limits. Market-structure rules remain stuck in the Senate. RLUSD's growth also flows to the stablecoin first, so XRP holders may wait for the news to show up in price.
