The 10 largest positions in the S&P 500 accounted for 39.03% of the index in an October 10, 2026 snapshot, concentrating more than a third of the benchmark in a small group of companies. That reading stands against an index with 503 constituents as of August 31, 2026, despite the S&P 500 name.
The ranking uses constituent weights based on a total S&P 500 market capitalisation of $71.12T. It reflects the mechanics of a float-adjusted, market-capitalisation-weighted index: larger companies receive larger allocations. Slickcharts provided the October 10 snapshot, while S&P Dow Jones Indices reported the August constituent count.

Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft lead the October 10 weight ranking
Slickcharts’ S&P 500 analysis put Nvidia Corp. first on October 10 with a 7.78% index weight, followed by Apple Inc. at 6.91% and Microsoft Corp. at 5.59%; the 10 ranked positions represented 39.03% of the benchmark.
Index weights are allocations rather than counts of shares outstanding or measures of a company’s full equity value. In the S&P 500’s float-adjusted market-capitalisation methodology, shares available to public investors help determine each constituent’s allocation.
Alphabet occupies two separately listed positions in the top 10
Amazon.com Inc. ranked fourth at 3.98% in the October 10 snapshot. Alphabet occupied the next two listed positions through its separately listed share classes: GOOGL, its Class A shares, ranked fifth at 3.11%, while GOOG, its Class C shares, ranked sixth at 2.90%. The entries were not two separate companies.
Meta Platforms, Broadcom, Tesla and Micron Technology completed ranks seven through 10 at 2.57%, 2.43%, 2.13% and 1.63%, respectively. The listed top 10 had a cumulative 39.03% weight, according to Slickcharts.
Technology’s 37.9% sector weight provides a separate August benchmark
Information Technology was the S&P 500’s largest sector, representing 37.9% of index weight as of August 31, 2026, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. That is a sector classification reading at an earlier date, rather than a directly comparable measure of the October 10 top-10 total, which spans individual constituents and includes companies outside the Information Technology sector.
S&P Dow Jones Indices’ August 31 constituent list also named Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet Class A, Broadcom, Alphabet Class C, Meta Platforms, Micron Technology and Tesla among the index’s 10 largest constituents by weight. It corroborates the companies represented at the top of the later October snapshot, even though the two sources are dated differently.
For the October 10 ranking, Nvidia’s 7.78% allocation remained ahead of Apple’s 6.91% and Microsoft’s 5.59%, establishing the three-company leadership tier in the data.
